How to buy Pi Coin in the USA has a one-line answer that most guides bury under a list of logos: Kraken. As of 27 July 2026 it is the only exchange that both serves US customers and lists spot PI. That is not a preference or a ranking. We queried the public instrument endpoints of every other US-serving venue we could reach, and PI is absent from all of them.
The negatives are specific rather than vague. Coinbase answers PI-USD with a NotFound message and carries zero PI markets across 831 products. Gemini rejects piusd as an invalid symbol, none of its 347 symbols being PI. Crypto.com's exchange returns zero PI instruments out of 909, which settles a question its own price page muddies — the "Buy PI" button there is marketing furniture, not a market you can place an order into. Robinhood's official supported-coin list does not include PI. Bybit never returned to the US after its 2023 exit and has no PI instrument anywhere. MEXC's terms name the United States verbatim among excluded countries, and Gate treats the US as a restricted location.
So this page is narrow by necessity: one venue, a short list of states where even that venue will not open an account, a network mistake that destroys funds permanently, and a reporting regime that changed shape in 2026. If you are outside the US, our guide to where to buy Pi Coin maps the other routes. The venue-by-venue rail audit, including which exchanges can actually pay you out on-chain, sits in the Pi Coin exchange audit.
The short answer for US buyers
Buy PI/USD on Kraken, in the advanced trading interface, as a limit order of at least 40 PI. Then decide deliberately whether the coins stay with Kraken or move to a wallet whose passphrase you hold. Everything below is either a constraint on that sentence or a consequence of it.
Kraken's PI parameters, read from Kraken's own pages and API on 27 July 2026
- Trading live since
- 13 March 2026. Kraken's blog states "PI trading is live as of March 13, 2026". Pi Network's own Pi Day 2026 post confirms it from the other side: "The centralized exchange Kraken has integrated support for Pi."
- Pairs
PIUSDandPIEUR, both returned with statusonline. US residents cannot deposit non-USD fiat, so PI/USD is the pair that matters to you.- Order minimum
- 40 PI on both pairs. This is the detail people trip over: you cannot place a one-coin test order to check the plumbing.
- Taker fee
- Tiers from 0.40% down to 0.05% by 30-day volume. If you are buying a few hundred dollars of PI, assume 0.40%.
- Deposit
- Fee 0, minimum 20 PI. Relevant only if you are sending mined Pi in, not buying it.
- Withdrawal
- Fee 3 PI, minimum 10 PI. At roughly $0.082 per PI that fee is about 25 cents, but it is a fixed 7.5% haircut on a 40 PI position.
- Interface at listing
- Kraken's notice said trading via the Kraken App and Instant Buy would arrive "once the liquidity conditions are met". Treat the Pro interface as the route.
- Liquidity
- PI/USD and PI/EUR together turned over roughly $11,500 in 24 hours, four months after listing. That is around 0.1% of PI's global volume.
Where these numbers come from
Kraken's figures are from its listing blog post, its published cryptocurrency deposit and withdrawal fee articles, and its public AssetPairs and Assets endpoints. Negative findings for other exchanges come from each venue's own public REST API — the same configuration that drives their live trading screens. Tax statements are quoted from irs.gov, Notice 2014-21 and the Form 1099-DA guidance. The New York rule is 23 NYCRR Part 200. All checks were run on 27 July 2026 and every one of them decays; re-verify before you act.
Every other US venue, tested against its own data
The question "which US exchanges sell Pi" is answerable without trusting anybody's press release, because exchanges publish machine-readable lists of what they trade. Here is what those lists said.
| Venue | Serves US | Spot PI | What its own data says |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kraken | Yes | Yes | PI/USD and PI/EUR online since 13 March 2026. Order minimum 40 PI. On Pi Network's KYB-verified list. |
| Coinbase | Yes | No | GET /products/PI-USD returns NotFound; 0 of 831 products. Price pages exist, one titled "Pi [IOU]". |
| Gemini | Yes | No | piusd returns InvalidSymbol; 0 of 347 symbols. |
| Crypto.com | Yes | No | 0 of 909 exchange instruments. The "Buy PI" call to action on its price page is not a listing. Whether the separate consumer app differs is something we could not verify, because the supported-coins help article 404s. |
| Robinhood | Yes | No | PI absent from the official coin-availability list. |
| OKX US | Yes | Contradictory | Re-entered the US on 2 June 2025 as a FinCEN-registered money services business, NMLS ID 1767779. PI availability is unresolved — see the section below. |
| Bybit | No | No | Exited the US in 2023 and has not returned. Zero PI among 576 spot symbols; PIUSDT returns "Not supported symbols". |
| MEXC | No | Has PI | Its terms exclude service to "the United States" by name. Four PI pairs exist; they are not for you. |
| Gate | No | Has PI | The US is a restricted location. We could not capture the verbatim clause because the page returns 403 to automated fetches. |
| Bitget | No | Has PI | No US entity exists; its terms of use list the US as a prohibited country. |
| BitMart | Ambiguous | Closing | Only product-level US exclusions confirmed. Irrelevant regardless: BitMart suspended deposits on 26 July 2026, ends trading on 26 August 2026 and closes on 31 January 2027 — and never enabled a native PI rail. |
Kraken's US eligibility is an inference, and we are labelling it as one
Kraken never published a sentence saying "PI is available to US clients." What it published is the opposite kind of evidence, and it is close to conclusive. Kraken maintains a list of assets US clients cannot deposit, hold or trade. In the P range that list names PACT, PARA, PARTI, PAXG, PEOPLE, PICA, PIPE, PLANCK, PNG, PORTAL, PRCL, PROS, PSTAKE and PYUSD. PI is not on it. Because the confusingly similar PICA and PIPE are restricted, PI's absence looks deliberate rather than an oversight — Kraken's compliance team clearly examined tickers in that neighbourhood.
That is a strong inference from a primary source. It is not a quote, and we are not going to dress it up as one. The only definitive test is opening the PI market inside your own verified account from your own state and seeing whether Kraken lets you place an order.
The OKX US claim is genuinely unresolved
Widely reported news dated 21 May 2026 said OKX opened US access to Pi, with spot pairs against USDT and USD. A Pi Core Team post the same day echoed it. Plenty of articles now repeat it as settled fact. We are not going to, and here is precisely why.
OKX's own US-locale PI page displays PI/USDT and PI/USDC while simultaneously disclosing that OKX "may support Pi Network in the future, subject to jurisdictional availability". That hedge is the language of an asset that is not currently supported for the reader's jurisdiction. Two statements on one page, pointing opposite directions.
The API host that looks like proof and is not
There is a methodological trap here that has produced a lot of confident, wrong writing. The us.okx.com instrument endpoint returns the identical global list of 1,318 instruments as the main domain — including SGD, AED and AUD pairs that OKX's US entity cannot legally offer. It is not geo-filtered. Anyone citing that endpoint as evidence of what a US customer can trade is citing the global product catalogue. The same caveat applies to the EEA host. We flag it because we nearly used it ourselves.
How to resolve it for yourself, in order of reliability: open the PI market inside a verified, funded OKX US account and see whether the order form accepts input; if it does not, check whether your state is served at all. Reported exclusions include New York, Texas, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands and the US Virgin Islands, but OKX's own compliance disclosure page says only "parts of the United States of America and its territories" without enumerating them, and variant lists adding Kentucky and Nevada could not be verified. Until someone documents a filled US order, treat OKX as unconfirmed and Kraken as the answer.
Affiliate disclosure: the two buttons above open a third-party exchange in a new tab and are tagged nofollow sponsored. We may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. This is not the official Pi Network app, the official Pi Wallet, or an endorsement — and the PI instrument sold there is an IOU, not native mainnet Pi. Nothing here is financial advice.
How to buy Pi Coin in the USA, step by step
Seven steps, in the order that minimises wasted effort. Step one exists because thousands of people upload a driver's licence before discovering their state is not served.
Check your state before you upload anything
Kraken does not serve residents of New York or Maine. Texas and New Hampshire residents cannot deposit or hold euros, which removes PI/EUR but leaves PI/USD intact. Confirm on Kraken's own licensing and US quick-start pages, not on a review site, and do it before you hand over identity documents.
Open the account and verify
Register, complete identity verification and turn on app-based two-factor authentication immediately — not SMS, which is vulnerable to number porting. Your verification level determines funding methods and limits. Nothing here is Pi-specific; it is the same onboarding as any other asset.
Fund in US dollars, because you have no alternative
US residents cannot deposit non-USD fiat on Kraken. Bank transfer is cheaper than card; card is faster. Either way the deposit currency decides your pair, and for you that means PI/USD. If you were planning to arbitrage against PI/EUR, that door is closed from a US account.
Find PIUSD in the advanced interface
Kraken's own listing notice said access through the Kraken App and Instant Buy would follow "once the liquidity conditions are met", which in practice means the Pro trading interface is where the market lives. Search the ticker
PIUSD. Check the pair status shows online before you commit anything.Place a limit order of 40 PI or more
The order minimum is 40 PI. Use a limit order, always. Both Kraken PI pairs together traded about $11,500 in a day, so a market order walks up a very short ladder of resting offers and fills at an average you did not agree to. Set your price, let it sit, and accept that it may not fill.
Decide custody on purpose, not by default
PI left on Kraken is a claim against Kraken — recoverable if you lose your password, freezable if compliance has questions. PI in a Pi Wallet is yours, with no reset and no appeal. Withdrawing costs 3 PI against a 10 PI minimum. Kraken requires a memo when you withdraw to a
G…address and states that a muxedM…address needs none. Our Pi Wallet guide covers what receiving Pi involves, including the passphrase nobody can restore.Write down the basis while you still know it
Record date, quantity, USD price and fees at the moment of purchase. This is not bookkeeping fussiness — most 2025 broker statements do not carry cost basis, and reconstructing it later from a thin market's history is genuinely painful. See the tax section below.
There is only one Pi network, and the wrong one is fatal
Kraken's own PI listing notice puts it in six words: "Deposits made using other networks will be lost." Not delayed. Not recoverable through support. Lost.
This matters more for Pi than for most assets because Pi has no EVM presence, no bridge and no contract address anywhere. Any token called PI that lives at a 0x… address is a different asset wearing the name. Some offshore venues expose wrapped PI variants on BNB Smart Chain and Ethereum in the same withdrawal dropdown as native PI, at wildly different fees. Pick the wrong line and you have sent an unaffiliated token to an address no Pi wallet can read.
State restrictions that actually bite
This is the practical punchline of the whole page, and almost no US-focused Pi guide states it correctly.
- New York and Maine: Kraken does not serve residents at all. Not for PI, not for anything. Kraken's own licensing page says so directly.
- Texas and New Hampshire: PI/USD is fine, PI/EUR is not. Residents of those two states cannot deposit or hold euros or trade EUR pairs. Since you were buying with dollars anyway, this is a footnote rather than a blocker.
- Every other state: no PI-specific restriction found on Kraken, as of 27 July 2026.
The consequence, stated plainly
Kraken is the only US venue with spot PI. Kraken does not serve New York or Maine. Therefore PI is effectively inaccessible on a US-regulated exchange to residents of New York and Maine. Not illegal to own — inaccessible to buy through a supervised counterparty. Those are different problems with different solutions.
What the New York BitLicense actually says
New York's rule is 23 NYCRR Part 200, effective 24 June 2015 and administered by the Department of Financial Services. The operative sentence: "No Person shall, without a license obtained from the superintendent… engage in any Virtual Currency Business Activity." The covered activities under 200.2(q) are transmitting virtual currency, holding custody or control for others, buying and selling as a customer business, providing exchange services, and controlling, administering or issuing a virtual currency.
Note what is not in that list. Consumers investing for their own personal purposes are exempt. So are merchants who accept crypto for goods, and so are advisers. The licence burden falls on the business, which is exactly why the practical effect on a New York resident is that exchanges decline to onboard them rather than that holding PI is unlawful. If you are in New York and hold mined Pi in a Pi Wallet, nothing about the BitLicense touches you.
Tax and IRS reporting for US Pi holders
What follows is research on published rules, not advice, and it is not a substitute for a CPA who can look at your actual transactions. The foundational point is that the IRS treats digital assets as "property, not currency", an approach dating to Notice 2014-21. Property means dispositions produce capital gain or loss, and the character depends on how long you held.
| What happened | Tax character | Where it goes | Broker reports it? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bought PI with USD | Not a taxable event | Nowhere yet — but record your basis | No |
| Sold PI held one year or less | Short-term capital gain or loss | Form 8949 → Schedule D | Yes, 1099-DA |
| Sold PI held more than one year | Long-term capital gain or loss | Form 8949 → Schedule D | Yes, 1099-DA |
| Swapped PI for USDT or another asset | Disposition of the PI at fair market value | Form 8949 → Schedule D | If on a custodial broker |
| Received Pi from mobile mining or rewards | Ordinary income at fair market value on receipt | Schedule 1 | No |
| Moved PI between your own wallets | Not a disposition | Nowhere — keep the record anyway | No |
The IRS states the holding-period rule without ambiguity: hold one year or less before selling or exchanging and you have a short-term gain or loss; hold more than one year and it is long-term. Capital items land on Form 8949 and are summarised on Schedule D of Form 1040. Ordinary income from mining, staking and forks goes to Schedule 1.
Form 1099-DA, and why your 2025 statement is probably incomplete
Broker reporting for digital assets phased in across two tax years. Brokers report gross proceeds for transactions effected on or after 1 January 2025, and cost basis for certain transactions effected on or after 1 January 2026. Payee statements for 2025 were due on 17 February 2026, and most of them will not include basis — which means the IRS receives a number for what you sold PI for, and nothing about what you paid. Computing the difference is your job. Transitional good-faith penalty relief applies to 2025 transactions, and Form 1099-DA was excluded from the Combined Federal/State Filing Program for that year, so state filing may need separate handling.
Who counts as a broker matters here. Congress repealed the so-called DeFi broker rule through H.J.Res.25, which passed the House on 11 March 2025 and the Senate on 26 March 2025 and was approved on 10 April 2025 as Public Law 119-5. The practical result for Pi holders: a custodial exchange like Kraken is a broker and will issue you a 1099-DA when you sell, while a self-custody Pi Wallet and any DeFi front-end are not. Nobody files a form on your behalf for coins sitting in your own wallet, which is a reporting convenience and an accounting liability at the same time.
The Pi-specific trap most tax guides miss
Pi's mobile mining rewards are ordinary income at the moment you receive them, valued at fair market value on that date. That is not a capital transaction and the one-year holding rule does not soften it. Now put that against the price record: PI is roughly 97% below its high of $2.98–2.99 on 26 February 2025, trading near $0.082 on 27 July 2026.
The arithmetic is unkind. A Pioneer whose balance migrated when PI was worth substantially more may have recognised ordinary income at that value while now holding coins worth a fraction of it. A later sale generates a capital loss, but capital losses offset ordinary income only within annual limits — they do not simply cancel it out. When exactly income is recognised for app-mined Pi, given the migration and lockup mechanics, is a genuinely contested question. Take it to a CPA with your actual dates. We are not licensed to answer it and neither is a forum thread. Our Pi Coin price record has the dated figures you will need.
Four US claims that are false
Each of these circulates widely enough that a US reader will meet it. Each is wrong, and we checked rather than assumed.
- "The SEC sued Pi Network in 2025." It did not. An EDGAR full-text search for "Pi Network" returns only third-party filings — nine of the ten hits come from a single unrelated issuer's 6-K and 40-F filings — and restricting to 8-K, 10-K, 10-Q and S-1 forms returns zero. No SEC litigation release, complaint, press release or Investor.gov alert names Pi Network, SocialChain Inc. or Pi Community Company. The claim conflates a private civil suit filed in the Northern District of California in October 2025 with a regulatory action. Those are different things: one is a plaintiff's allegation, the other is the government. We could not independently locate the court docket either, so treat even the private case as reported rather than verified.
- "Hawaii residents are excluded." No current restriction was found. Kraken's own list names New York and Maine only. Hawaii historically pushed exchanges out through a double-reserve money-transmitter interpretation, later addressed via the state's Digital Currency Innovation Lab. The claim is a fossil of 2017–2018 conditions, repeated by guides that never rechecked.
- "PI is buyable on OKX US." Unresolved, as set out above — reported by news outlets and a Pi Core Team post, contradicted by OKX's own US-locale disclosure, and unprovable from the
us.okx.comAPI because that host is not geo-filtered. - "Coinbase lists Pi." Zero of 831 products, and
PI-USDreturns NotFound. Coinbase's price pages, one of them explicitly labelled "Pi [IOU]", are information pages driven by aggregator feeds. The same applies to Crypto.com's "Buy PI" widget. A price page is not a market, and a call-to-action button is not a listing.
The mining app in the US, and why it is a different subject
The Pi Network mining app is fully available to US users, which surprises people who have absorbed the idea that Pi is somehow restricted in America. We verified both storefronts. On Apple's US store the app is published by SOCIALCHAIN INC. with bundle identifier com.socialchain.blockchainvault, version 1.46 released on 23 July 2026, rated 4.19 stars from 13,132 ratings and requiring iOS 13.0 or later. On Google Play the US listing is live under developer SocialChain. No US-specific store restriction exists.
What that does not mean is that you have bought anything. Mining in the app produces a mobile balance, which lives in Pi's database rather than on the blockchain and cannot be sent, sold or withdrawn until it has passed KYC and the Mainnet Checklist. Buying PI on Kraken and mining PI in the app are unrelated activities with unrelated risk profiles — the first is a trade against an order book, the second is a claim on a scheduled issuance that may or may not become transferable. Our buying and selling walkthrough handles the migration side, because a US Pioneer selling mined Pi has prerequisites a US buyer never encounters.
Verdict for US buyers
You are in a served state and want regulated exposure: Kraken PI/USD, limit order, 40 PI minimum, 0.40% taker fee for most people. Accept the thin book as the price of a supervised counterparty.
You are in New York or Maine: there is no US-regulated route today. Waiting is a legitimate answer, and so is deciding this asset is not worth the workaround. We are not going to suggest ways around a venue's geographic restrictions.
You are in Texas or New Hampshire: proceed normally on PI/USD. Only the EUR pair is closed to you.
You already mined Pi and want to sell it in the US: Kraken is the only regulated venue that can receive it, and it will report your gross proceeds on Form 1099-DA. Get the memo requirement right — required for a G… address, not required for a muxed M… address — before you send anything.
You saw a headline saying OKX now serves US Pi traders: verify it inside your own funded account. Do not verify it against the us.okx.com API, and do not take our word for it either.
One closing figure that frames every decision above. Kraken's two PI pairs turned over roughly $11,500 in a day, four months after the listing that moved the price 30% in a morning and then 28% the other way within 24 hours. Regulatory legitimacy arrived in the US market for Pi. Liquidity did not follow. Size your order to the book you can actually see, and remember that Pi's own MiCA disclosure says the asset may lose its value in part or in full, may not always be transferable, and may not be liquid.
Frequently asked questions
Can I buy Pi Coin on Coinbase?
No. Coinbase has never listed PI. We queried its public product endpoint on 27 July 2026: PI-USD returns a NotFound message, and PI appears in none of Coinbase's 831 products. Coinbase does host price pages, one of which is explicitly titled "Pi [IOU]", but a price page is an information page fed by aggregator data. It is not a market and you cannot place an order in it.
Is Pi Coin legal to buy and hold in the United States?
Nothing we could find prohibits a US individual from buying or holding PI. No SEC action, litigation release or investor alert names Pi Network, SocialChain Inc. or Pi Community Company. New York's BitLicense regime regulates virtual-currency businesses, and 23 NYCRR Part 200 exempts consumers investing for personal purposes. The constraint is commercial, not criminal: exchanges choose which states to serve.
Why can I not use Kraken for Pi in New York?
Because Kraken does not serve residents of New York or Maine at all, for any asset. New York requires a BitLicense under 23 NYCRR Part 200, in force since 24 June 2015, for firms conducting virtual-currency business activity with New York residents. Kraken's own licensing page lists both states as unserved. Since Kraken is the only US venue with spot PI, PI is effectively inaccessible on a US-regulated exchange from those two states.
Do I owe tax on Pi I mined in the app?
The IRS treats digital assets as property, not currency, and mining or reward income is ordinary income at the time you receive it, reported on Schedule 1. That creates a specific problem for Pi: PI is roughly 97% below its February 2025 high, so income recognised at a much higher notional value may exceed what the coins are worth now. Capital gains analysis only starts when you dispose of them. Talk to a CPA about your specific facts.
Is Pi Coin on Robinhood?
No. PI does not appear on Robinhood's official coin-availability list as of 27 July 2026. Robinhood does maintain per-asset state flags for the tokens it does support — several are marked unavailable in New York and USDC is flagged for Texas — but none of that applies to PI, because Robinhood has no PI market. A long-running petition asking Coinbase, Crypto.com and Robinhood to list Pi is itself evidence that none of them has.
What will buying 40 PI on Kraken actually cost me?
Three components. The PI itself at whatever the book offers — around $0.082 on 27 July 2026, so roughly $3.30 for the 40 PI minimum. Kraken's taker fee, which tiers from 0.40% down to 0.05% depending on your 30-day volume, so 0.40% for almost everyone reading this. And, if you withdraw, a flat 3 PI network withdrawal fee against a 10 PI minimum withdrawal. Note that the 3 PI fee is a meaningful percentage of a small position.
Can US customers buy PI on OKX?
We cannot confirm it and we will not assert it. News coverage from 21 May 2026, echoed by a Pi Core Team post, reported that OKX opened US access to Pi. But OKX's own US-locale PI page simultaneously says OKX "may support Pi Network in the future, subject to jurisdictional availability", which reads as not currently supported. The us.okx.com API host returns the identical global instrument list, including pairs OKX US cannot legally offer, so it proves nothing. Check inside a funded, verified US account before believing either version.
Is Hawaii excluded from buying Pi?
Not that we could establish. Kraken's own restriction list names New York and Maine only, and we found no current Hawaii exclusion at Kraken, Coinbase or Robinhood. Hawaii did historically push exchanges out with a double-reserve money-transmitter interpretation, which was later addressed through the state's Digital Currency Innovation Lab. The claim circulates because it used to be true of some venues. Verify against the exchange's current page rather than a 2018 article.
